Research on my genre

For my final film opening I decided to go with the genre; suspense/thriller

The suspense/thriller genre is all about keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. These movies are designed to make people feel anxious, excited, or scared as they follow the story. What makes this genre special is how it uses tension and surprise to create an emotional experience. Unlike horror, which relies on fear and gore, thrillers focus more on psychological conflict and clever storytelling.

A lot of thrillers revolve around mysteries, dangerous situations, or unexpected twists. Directors often use music, lighting, and camera angles to create suspense. For example, low lighting and creepy background music in Se7en (1995) make the audience feel uneasy even before anything scary happens. Another classic is The Silence of the Lambs (1991), which keeps viewers hooked with its mix of psychological games and intense moments.

What’s great about this genre is how versatile it is. Thrillers can blend with other genres, like action (The Dark Knight), mystery (Gone Girl), or even sci-fi (Inception). But no matter the subgenre, the key is always the same keeping the audience guessing. Directors like Alfred Hitchcock, known as the “Master of Suspense,” are famous for using techniques like false leads or showing the audience things the characters don’t know to heighten the tension.
